The Russians continue to systematically torture and kill Ukrainian prisoners of war who fall into their hands.

The UN mission has documented the execution of at least 32 captured Ukrainian soldiers this winter. We are talking about the period from December 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024. This was stated on Tuesday, March 26, in the report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

“There is credible documentation of the execution of at least 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war on 12 separate occasions between December 2023 and February 2024, far more than in any previous period,” the report said.

It was noted that the Ukrainian soldiers who were freed said they experienced terrible treatment in Russian captivity, they were not allowed to communicate with their families, they were deprived of adequate food and medical care.

“Conditions in captivity in Russia have a serious impact on the physical and mental well-being of many prisoners of war, with the risk of long-term effects,” the UN said.

The Russian military and officials are reported to be torturing prisoners, including using beatings, electric shocks, forcing them to remain in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time, threatening or simulating execution. More than half of the prisoners are survivors of sexual violence.

In addition, the mission report contains information about the violence of the Russian administration against the residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine. These include the killing of civilians, arbitrary detention and restrictions on freedom of expression.

We remind you that in Ukraine they are creating an electronic database of prisoners and missing persons.
