The enemy is holding more than 10 thousand Ukrainian civilians in the occupied territories and in the Russian Federation; 5,600 Ukrainians were identified as victims of torture by the occupiers in criminal proceedings. About this in an interview with the agency Interfax-Ukraine said Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andrey Kostin.
The Prosecutor General states that the real numbers are higher, since we are only talking about confirmed cases.
“There are different numbers. We estimate tens of thousands, more than 10 thousands for sure. We are only talking about those who were forcibly resettled, and not about those who made such a decision on their own judgment, Kostin said.
The Prosecutor General also said that the process of creating a registry of civilian prisoners continues, and that the matter has reached the international level – the first meeting of an international platform similar to the one dealing with the return of children was performed.
Journalists wonder if it is possible to at least approximately establish the ratio of people who voluntarily moved to the land of the occupier, and who were forcibly removed and are now in prison.
“When we talk about occupied territories, it is not appropriate to use the word “volunteer”. Some are forced to leave because of rebellion, others are promised material aid and illusory security. But any action taken under duress is not voluntary. For some , the only way to return to Ukraine – to get out of Russia, there are many such cases,” emphasized Kostin.
The Prosecutor General also added that in criminal proceedings alone, 5,600 Ukrainians who suffered torture have been identified, but there is no reliable information from the occupied territories, so the real number is completely different.
The interview also provides data on torture facilities: the functioning of 164 torture chambers and other places of forced confinement in the territories under occupation was documented.
Earlier it was reported that a platform for the release of Ukrainian civilians from Russian captivity was opened.
