The Alliance Parliamentary Assembly created a new NATO PA status for countries wishing to join.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly plans to grant Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia the status of candidates for membership in the Alliance. This is a new status for the country in the Assembly, which agreed to create a Standing Committee as part of a comprehensive partnership reform, the NATO PA said on Sunday, March 24.
“The Standing Committee agreed to create a new NATO PA status for countries seeking to join the Alliance, and to formally designate Ukraine, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia, as candidates for NATO membership. In two other important decisions, the Standing Committee decided to upgrade Kosovo’s status in the Assembly from parliamentary observer to associate member, and also grant associate membership to the Parliament of Malta,” the statement said.
These changes to the partnership must be ratified by the full Assembly at the 2024 spring session in Bulgaria at the end of May.
Earlier, a Pentagon spokesman promised that the Alliance Summit in Washington would pave the way for Ukraine to join NATO.
