Over the past year, more Russians have died than the year before, and fewer have been born.
In Russia, the so-called natural decline of the population (the excess of deaths over the number of births) has increased dramatically over the years. In January 2024, compared to January 2023, it increased by 21.9%, reaching 78,269 people (compared to 64,219 people last year), Rosstat reported.
It was noted that the number of births in January 2024 decreased by 0.8% – to 103,408 children from 104,199 children in January 2023.
The number of deaths in January 2024 increased by 7.9% to 181,677 people from 168,418 in January 2023.
At the same time, Rosstat clarified the estimate of natural population decline for 2023 – up to 500.3 thousand people from 495.2 thousand people according to a preliminary estimate.
It was mentioned that on January 1, 2024, the country’s population is 146,150.8 thousand people.
Rosstat said that this is an estimate without taking into account statistical information from the occupied territories of Ukraine.
