Hungary opposes the use of these funds to purchase weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Deutsche Welle reports, citing a source.
According to a senior European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, there is a general understanding among most EU countries that the confiscated funds should be used to buy weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainian military.
Now Ukraine needs money more for weapons, and, unfortunately, not for reconstruction. And we strive to do everything to avoid further destruction in Ukraine,” he said.
According to the source, Hungary claims that the money should go towards anything but weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Another controversial issue at the summit, according to DW’s interlocutor, will be the discussion on EU enlargement.
There are member states that oppose the opening of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova under the Belgian EU presidency,” he said, refusing to specify which countries were being discussed.
DW reminds that the Belgian EU Presidency will last until July 1, after which it will transfer to Hungary.
