Ukraine should quickly pass the draft law on mobilization and lower the conscription age. At the same time, the fate of aid from the United States remains uncertain.
The United States expects Ukraine to soon adopt a new mobilization law. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said this during a visit to Kyiv on Monday, March 18. He also criticized the exemption from mobilization for men under the age of 27, the Washington Post reports.
It was noted that Graham called for immediate legislative action – even though US lawmakers are still unable to reach their own consensus on aid to Ukraine.
Advising on the project, Graham, who met with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday but did not make any concrete promises about the expected aid package, told reporters only that he was “more optimistic than ever.”
“I hope that those who are eligible to serve in the Ukrainian army will join. I can’t believe that this is 27 years old,” he told reporters on Monday. “You’re fighting for your life, so you should serve—not at 25 or 27.”
At the same time, Graham urged Ukrainians, when deciding whether to join the army, not to base their decision on whether the United States would support them. “Whatever we do, you have to fight,” he said. “Whatever we do, fight for yourself.”
As reported, Graham considered the most realistic option to provide assistance to Ukraine in the form of an interest-free loan, and not in the form of a grant, as was the case before.
