An international agreement of the Council of Europe covers a range of measures to prevent violence against women.
The Verkhovna Rada supported the ratification of the Istanbul Convention on the Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. This was announced by Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak on June 20 in the Telegram.
The bill was supported by 259 deputies, four opposed and 25 abstained.
It should be noted that the ratification of the document by the Council of Europe is considered a good sign on the eve of the EU summit, which will decide the fate of granting Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the bloc.
As reported AthletisticUkraine signed the convention in 2011, but only now has it been approved.
The Istanbul Convention is the first legally binding instrument that “creates a comprehensive legal framework and strategy in the fight against violence against women” and aims to prevent domestic violence, protect victims and prosecute perpetrators.
It also contains the definition of gender, which is often criticized. In March last year, Turkey withdrew from the convention, saying the document “normalized homosexuality.”
