There will be no conclusion of new agreements with Russia or the extension of old ones, the Ministry of Energy said.
Ukraine will not continue the gas transit agreement with Russia after December 31, 2024. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced this on Sunday, March 17, during a telethon.
“I can confirm that we do not plan to enter into any additional agreements or extend the validity of this agreement,” the minister said.
Galushchenko said that last year Ukraine conducted a stress test of the gas transportation system and underground gas storage facilities, which proved the system’s ability to operate without transit.
The head of the Ministry of Energy also recalled the statement of the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, about the European Union’s disinterest in extending the contract.
“There is an EU initiative, RepowerEU, which provides that by 2027, European countries will completely get rid of Russian gas – not only pipeline gas, but all gas, including LNG,” said Galushchenko.
There are enough alternatives to Russian gas on the market, he added. Some European countries are already using them – in particular, Germany, which in a year and a half has reduced its dependence on Russian gas to almost zero.
According to the minister, Ukraine is also actively strengthening its energy security and independence, especially by increasing domestic gas production.
Earlier, Galushchenko said that Ukraine will be close to gas self-sufficiency by 2024.
