The Welsh Labor Party has elected 50-year-old Waun Gething as its new leader. The majority voted for him.
Labour’s Vaughn Getting will be the first black head of government in Wales and Europe. The BBC reported this on Saturday, March 16.
Götting will be confirmed in his position next week.
With 51.7% of the Labor vote, the new leader promised to tackle the problems facing Wales, including the cost of living crisis, disgruntled farmers and failing health and education systems.
“Today we are opening a page in the history book of our country. A history that we are writing together. Not only because I have the honor of being the first black leader in a European country, but also because there has been a change in generation,” he said, talking to party colleagues.
Göthing has been congratulated on his victory by British Labor leader Keir Starmer and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The region’s former First Minister Mark Drakeford, who has held the post and been Labor leader in Wales since 2018, is due to officially resign on Tuesday, with Göthing taking office on Wednesday.
It is known that Getching was born in the former British colony of Zambia, the son of a white vet from south Wales and a black farmer from Lusaka. His parents moved to Wales when he was two and later settled in England after experiencing racism in the Welsh countryside.
With Britain’s general election due later this year, Götting will be a key player in the Labor Party’s bid to end 14 years of Conservative rule.
President Vladimir Zelensky appointed the former head of the military administration of the Luhansk region, Sergei Gaidai, as the head of the Mukachevo state administration in the Transcarpathian region.
