Western security assistance will be critical to Ukraine’s ability to hold onto territory now and repel further Russian attacks in the coming months.
Russian troops will likely continue offensive operations to break Ukrainian defense lines in the spring of 2024, preparing for a new offensive operation expected for the summer. This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It says the provision of Western security assistance will play a critical role in Ukraine’s ability to hold territory now and repel new Russian attacks in the coming months.
At the same time, Russian troops are trying to maintain the pace of their offensive operations in eastern Ukraine to prevent Ukrainian forces from consolidating defense lines. Russian troops were particularly focused on advancing as far west of Avdievka as possible.
According to ISW, Russian invaders will continue to take advantage of having the initiative across the front to dynamically redistribute offensive efforts this spring and summer, likely hoping to exploit possible defense weaknesses of Ukrainian.
“The well-resourced Ukrainian troops have shown that they can prevent the Russians from achieving even marginal gains during a large-scale offensive, so there is no reason to doubt that Ukraine will be able to further stabilize the front line and prepare to repel Russian attacks if logistical deficiencies are reduced,” – said the ISW report.
In the past, the media wrote that Russia may be planning a major offensive in the summer.
