This was announced on March 14 at a press briefing in Brussels by Peter Stano, spokesman for the Chairman of European Diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
We know what this will look like, given the experience of preparing and organizing elections in Russia under the current Kremlin administration and regime,” Stano said. “It is very difficult to imagine that these will be free, fair and democratic elections in which the Russian people will truly have a choice.”
He noted that neither the EU nor the community countries have yet made a decision on recognition or non-recognition of the March 15-17 elections. They will do this only after voting.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed a similar opinion today:
Voting in Russia will not be free and fair. We already know that opposition politicians are in prison, some have been killed, many are in exile, and some who tried to register as candidates have been denied the right. There is no free and independent press in Russia.
At the same time, Stano and Stoltenberg stated that the EU and NATO clearly do not recognize the Russian presidential elections in the occupied regions of Ukraine.
