For the first time in history, Ukraine won an Academy Award. The documentary film “20 days in Mariupol” by Ukrainian director Mstislav Chernov was recognized as “Best full-length documentary”. Chernov, photojournalist Evgeniy Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko received the statuette on stage. All of them worked in Mariupol, surrounded by occupiers, in 2022. This was reported in the broadcast of the Oscar ceremony.
I thank everyone who helped create this film and accompanied me on this journey. This is the first Oscar in the history of Ukraine. It’s an honor for me. But, probably, I will be the first director on this stage to say that it would be better if I had never made this film. If I could change this. So that Russia never attacks Ukraine, never occupies our cities. I would give everything so that Russia would not kill tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainian citizens. I would like to see all the hostages released, all the soldiers defending their lands and all the civilians currently in their prisons. I can’t change history. I can’t change the past. But. All of us in this room, the most talented people in the world, can make sure that the truth prevails. And the people of Mariupol and those who gave their lives will never be forgotten. Because cinema shapes memories. And memories shape history. Thanks everyone. Thanks to Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine! – Chernov made a speech, which was later called the strongest performance at the ceremony.
