The European Commission will have the authority to introduce any necessary measures in the event of significant disruptions in the markets of EU countries due to Ukrainian imports.
The European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade approved the extension of trade liberalization for Ukraine and Moldova for another year – until June 5, 2025. The EP press service reported this on Thursday, March 7.
The corresponding decision received 26 votes of European deputies in favor, another 10 against and one abstention.
The European Parliament noted that this law “gives the Commission the power to take swift action and introduce any necessary measures in the event of a significant disruption of the EU market or the markets of one or more countries in the EU because of Ukrainian imports.”
“It also includes the emergency brake on particularly sensitive agricultural products, such as poultry, eggs and sugar, meaning that if imports of these products exceed the averages of 2022 and 2023, will be re-imposed the tariffs. Liberalization measures depend on Ukraine’s respect for democratic principles, human. rights, the rule of law and its continued efforts in the fight against corruption and organized crime,” said the press release.
The European Parliament is expected to vote on trade liberalization at first reading in a plenary session next week. The EU Council will then formally approve the regulation and it will enter into force when published in the Official Journal of the EU.
As you know, in May 2022, the Council of the EU for the first time decided to remove all duties and quotas on exports from Ukraine for one year to support the full-scale invasion of Russia. This regime was extended in 2023.
At the same time, due to the dissatisfaction of farmers, the EU introduced temporary restrictions on certain types of agricultural products for several months in 2023, and individual countries, especially Poland, extended them unilaterally even after cancellation at the EU level.
