In Albania, NATO’s first airbase in the Western Balkans began operating with a modernized military airport in the city of Kuceva. Associated Press reports.

It was learned that the former Soviet air base will serve as a training site and will also house fighter jets.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama called the modernization of the old airport, which has not been used since 2005, a contribution to regional security.

After the opening ceremony, four fighter jets landed at the air base – two F-16s and two F-35s from Italy.

NATO has reportedly invested around 50 million euros in renovating the base.

Let’s recall that in September 2023, the media reported that the construction of a new NATO military base in Bulgaria was about to begin. These include military barracks and equipment storage buildings. In addition, new roads will be built around it.

It has also been reported that NATO will deploy AWACS observation aircraft to Romania.
