The command of the aggressor country is probably ready to continue losing aircraft in order to achieve tactical successes in the East of Ukraine along the Avdeevka-Donetsk line. However, the previous losses of the occupiers did not force Russian forces to significantly reduce the activity of tactical aviation. This is stated in a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Experts note that the occupiers temporarily established a limited and localized advantage in the air during the last days after the capture of Avdiivka. However, the Russians are trying to maintain this advantage and have decided that continuing offensive operations with air support prevails over the risk of losing more aircraft.
ISW noted that the loss of 15 aircraft and professional pilots over the past two weeks is significant for the Russian army, but Russia operates about 300 different Sukhoi fighters.
Let us recall that during February 2024, the Ukrainian military shot down 13 Russian military aircraft: 10 Su-34 fighter-bombers, two Su-35 fighters and an A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft. And on March 1 and 2, the Russian army lost two more Su-34s.
