Ottawa may send a limited number of troops to Ukraine. These units will not participate in combat operations, but are ready to train Ukrainian soldiers. Canadian Defense Minister Billy Blair said this in an interview with the Toronto Star.
According to him, the idea of sending the military was discussed earlier this week in Paris, where he was present. Canada is there, and most NATO countries did not support French President Emmanuel Macron’s idea of sending allied ground forces to Ukraine.
Blair did not rule out a possible non-combat mission for the Canadian military in Ukraine. They may be involved in training Ukrainian defenders on the territory of Ukraine. However, this will happen provided that it happens away from the front line.
It is also reported that the agreement between Canada and Ukraine, signed over the weekend, stipulates that Canada can conduct training activities in Ukraine “when conditions permit.”
Let us recall that on February 26, French President Emmanuel Macron announced new steps to support Ukraine and said that in order to defeat Russia in the war, sending Western ground forces to the country is not excluded.
After this, a number of European countries and the United States disowned the idea of sending their military to Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said that the Alliance does not plan to send combat troops to Ukraine.
