On February 8, Patriarch Filaret awarded military personnel from the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after them with medals for “Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine.” Black Cossacks.
In particular, the award was received by activist and openly gay Viktor Pilipenko. He thanked for the medal and wrote that he was “sincerely glad to see such a fundamental change in position” regarding LGBT+ people.
However, it turned out that the position of the UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate did not change. The press service of the church emphasized that Viktor Pilipenko received gratitude solely as a defender of Ukraine, and Patriarch Filaret “did not know about his sinful inclinations.” For “open propaganda of sinful ideology,” the military man’s award was revoked.
