For Eastern European states, the delay in helping Kyiv indicates that “the West does not seem to understand the urgency of the situation.”
The European Union’s failure to send a million artillery shells to Ukraine on time has caused a rift between Western and Eastern Europe. Bloomberg wrote this on Saturday, February 24, which conducted several interviews with European officials, with the condition of anonymity.
European diplomats interviewed by the agency believe that if Russia wins the war in Ukraine, “Western Europe will not be forgiven for this,” and the project of European integration could be in jeopardy.
The publication indicates the ambiguous attitude of a number of politicians in the East to the position of some Western countries in the search for sources of artillery shells for Ukraine.
“France actively insists that relevant investments should remain only within the EU – which has already slowed the supply of shells,” Bloomberg wrote.
Additionally, Cyprus and Greece, for geopolitical reasons, oppose the purchase of shells from Turkey.
Eastern European states believe that this attitude shows that “the West does not understand the urgency of the situation,” said one of Bloomberg’s interlocutors.
Eastern European states also have claims against Germany. Although it is one of the largest donors of military and financial aid to Ukraine, the German authorities’ stance on the supply of long-range Taurus missiles has irritated capitals east of Berlin.
“The lack of trust of Eastern Europe in Western Europe is also evident in the search for a new NATO Secretary General. Although the majority of its members support the candidacy of Mark Rutte, his lack of communication with the states of Eastern Europe prompted the nomination of Romanian President Klaus Johannis, ” the publication stated.
The UK will spend £245 million ($310 million – ed.) over the course of the year to buy and strengthen supply chains to produce artillery ammunition for Ukraine.
