Criminals promised citizens to return their relatives from captivity in Russia for 30 thousand dollars.
In Ukraine, two citizens were exposed and imprisoned for extorting funds from relatives of prisoners of war for the alleged return of their relatives. This was reported by the press service of the Office of the Prosecutor General on Tuesday, February 20.
The suspects promised the victims that they would help return their relatives from captivity in Russia. For this they asked for funds in the amount of 30 thousand dollars. Most of this money was intended to be transferred to representatives of the Russian intelligence services.
“Such actions imply the voluntary collection, preparation and transfer of material resources or other assets to representatives of the aggressor state,” the Office of the Prosecutor General said.
The investigation proved that a relative of a Ukrainian prisoner of war approached the detainees with a request to release him. For a certain amount they promise to solve the issue.
After the transfer of the last part of the funds – 10 thousand dollars – the dealers were detained. They were declared suspects of collusion with the Russian Federation and opted for a preventive measure in the form of detention without the alternative of bail.
We remind you that a resident of Kharkov who promised to “return from Russian captivity” a dead Ukrainian military man was told on suspicion of fraud.
At the beginning of the year, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets said that the activity of scammers profiting from relatives of captured Ukrainians has increased.
