If imposed, the sanctions would be the first direct sanctions against Beijing for supporting the war in Ukraine.
The United States is considering sanctions against Chinese companies suspected of aiding Russia in its war against Ukraine. CNBC reported this on Monday, February 19, citing American congressmen.
“The United States is considering sanctions against Chinese companies believed to be helping Russia fuel the conflict in Ukraine… which would be the first direct accusation against Beijing,” the channel said.
Democratic Senator Gerry Connolly said such plans were being considered after similar measures were proposed last week by the European Union.
According to him, they can be introduced “soon”, despite the mutual dependence of trade between the two countries. Still, he hopes the very threat of such restrictions will “clarify some thinking in Beijing.”
“And frankly, China has more to lose than Russia,” Connolly said on TV.
It noted that these provisions, if introduced, would be the first direct sanctions against Beijing, despite long-standing Western suspicions of supporting Russian military operations.
Let’s recall that in early January, China imposed sanctions against US defense companies for the supply of their products to Taiwan.
It was previously reported that in Ukraine, the Chinese manufacturer of all-terrain vehicles was included in the list of war sponsors.
