The transfer of money to a foreign ally was the first of its kind to provide aid to Ukraine, the US Department of Justice said.
The United States transferred confiscated Russian assets intended to support Ukraine to Estonia. The US Department of Justice announced this on Saturday, February 17.
Indicated today at the Munich Security Conference, US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and Estonian Secretary General Tinis Saar announced the transfer of $500 thousand from confiscated Russian funds. These assets were confiscated in the case of a network of illegal purchases of high-precision machine tools for the Russian military industry.
“This transfer is the first of its kind from the United States to a foreign ally for the express purpose of providing assistance to Ukraine,” the statement said.
And the American ministry explained that they decided to transfer the confiscated funds to Estonia, because it was not possible to make a direct transfer to Ukraine. And Estonia will use this money for a project to speed up damage assessment and critical repairs to the Ukrainian energy system after Russian military strikes.
The US Department of Justice also recalled that in February 2023, $5.4 million of the assets of sanctioned Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev were confiscated. This money was transferred to support Ukrainian war veterans.
We remind you that this week the European Council approved a resolution allowing the use of fixed assets of the Russian Federation. In turn, the Kremlin reacted nervously.
