Russia officially announced its withdrawal from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on Friday, which was suspended following a global outcry over its military strike on Ukraine in April. Government: “Accepts the proposal of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (…) to withdraw from the World Tourism Organization of the Russian Federation.”It is said in the decree signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Michustin.
The UNWTO, a UN agency responsible for tourism promotion, has been in Madrid since 1976 and announced on April 27 that Russia was suspending its intervention in Ukraine, which was contrary to its “values”. Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is becoming more and more isolated in the diplomatic arena. For example, it was removed from the UN Human Rights Council, where its seat was suspended. Western countries have also imposed severe economic sanctions on Moscow.
