After the news of the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Russian ruble exchange rate fell to its lowest level. The Moscow Times reported this on Friday, February 16, in connection with the Moscow Exchange.
“In the pairs of euro and yuan, the minimums were reached since January 9, 99.85 and 12.81, respectively, and against the dollar – the mark of 93.00, the worst for the ruble since January 4, excluding two short-term jumps in the exchange rate in recent months, which are more likely to be related to market participants for a technical reason,” said the publication.
It is noted that the dollar/ruble pair with “open” fixes until 14.35 Moscow time is at 92.92 and the ruble is losing 0.7%, and the euro/ruble pair is close to 99.73 and the ruble is losing 0.4% of Thursday’s closing level. In yuan terms, the ruble was quoted at around 12.78, losing 0.3%.
Let’s recall that on Friday, February 16, the Russian Federation reported that Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny died at IK-3 Polar Wolf in the village of Kharp, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation. During his imprisonment, Navalny was sent to a punishment cell 27 times. In total, he spent 308 days in the punishment cell.
In August 2023, Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
