American intelligence considers it unlikely that the Russian Federation will be able to deploy a nuclear warhead in space, writes Reuters.
Analysts say the space-based weapon that Russia may be developing is more likely to be a nuclear device to blind, jam or burn out the electronics inside satellites, rather than an explosive nuclear warhead to destroy them. . Reuters reported this on Thursday, February 15.
The agency source noted that Washington has received new intelligence data related to Russia’s nuclear capabilities and attempts to develop space-based weapons. According to them, Russia’s new capabilities do not pose a threat to the United States.
The agency, citing analysts who monitor Russia’s space programs, wrote that the threat to space is unlikely to be a nuclear warhead, but rather a powerful device that requires nuclear power for a range of attacks on satellites. These can be signal jammers, weapons capable of blinding image sensors, or electromagnetic pulses capable of disabling all satellite electronics in a given orbital region.
“That Russia is developing a system powered by a nuclear source… and having electronic warfare capabilities in orbit is more likely than the theory that Russia is developing a weapon with a nuclear warhead,” said of the executive director of the advocacy group Association for the Control of Nuclear Weapons Daryl Kimbell.
A 2023 Defense Intelligence Agency report states that Russia is developing an array of weapons designed to target individual satellites and is also allegedly developing “more powerful systems that extend the threat across satellite structures.”
Let’s remember that the day before the media reported that Russia intends to launch nuclear weapons into space. That’s why the head of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, declared a threat to US national security and called on American President Joe Biden to declassify all information about this matter.
On Thursday, the White House confirmed reports that Russia is developing anti-satellite weapons, but stressed that this is not an active capability that has been deployed, but a possible capability.
