An anniversary summit will be held in Washington this summer – the North Atlantic Alliance will be 75 years old. Kiev hopes that at this summit an invitation to Ukraine to join will be announced.
At the NATO summit, which will take place in July 2024 in Washington, Ukraine is not expected to be invited to the Alliance. This is what the spokesperson of the US State Department, Daniel Isaac, said in a commentary on Suspilny.
He noted that Ukrainians are eager to be part of NATO, but the main priority now is providing defense assistance rather than inviting membership.
Isaac said that there are more and more conflicts in the world, and therefore there are also more challenges. However, it can be noted that despite the disagreement among NATO members, in the end NATO’s decision remains unanimous on Ukraine’s entry.
As an example, the official cited last year’s NATO summit in Vilnius, where all members of the Alliance repeated that “Ukraine has a place in NATO.”
“NATO members know and understand that Ukrainians want to become NATO members immediately and as soon as possible. Actually, it is not expected at the NATO summit this year… maybe after the war,” said a State Department spokesman.
According to him, continued cooperation within the Senate is expected to carry out reforms in Ukraine. The main priority now is to provide aid to defend against Russian aggression.
As you know, on July 11-12, at the summit in Vilnius, NATO members agreed to remove MAP from Ukraine’s path to the Alliance. A multi-year aid program for Ukraine was also approved and the Ukraine-NATO Council was created. Since then, Ukraine began to hope that they would hear an invitation to join the Alliance at the next summit after not hearing it in Vilnius.
Let’s remember that in January the Office of the President said that they expected a “historic decision” on Ukraine at the NATO summit in Washington.
