The Drammen municipal council voted to accept only Ukrainian refugees, despite reservations by the country’s government.
One of the largest cities in Norway, Drammen, despite a warning from the country’s government, decided to accept only Ukrainian refugees. Nettavisen reports.
The city’s vote to accept only Ukrainian refugees sparked a public outcry.
The municipal council of Drammen, Norway’s fifth largest city, made a provocative decision on Wednesday, February 14th. In particular, the council, made up of conservatives, anti-immigration populists, Christian Democrats and a party representing pensioners, voted to accept only Ukrainian refugees.
Thus, they ignored the warning of the center-left government, and also drew criticism from Norwegian society for this decision.
We previously wrote that Norway, for the second time in two months, decided to limit financial assistance to refugees from Ukraine in order to avoid excessive burden on municipalities and maintain a high level of provision of services and benefits.
Let’s add that in December last year, Norway tightened the rules for Ukrainian refugees.
