Some farmers on Monday, February 19, will go with heavy equipment to Prague, where they want to block the highway.
Next week, Czech farmers will join international protests by agricultural organizations in Central and Eastern Europe over the European Union’s agricultural policy and the import of cheap products from Ukraine. Novinky reported this on Tuesday, February 13.
“As part of a mass action that will take place on February 22, they will organize a protest march to the border crossings, where they will meet colleagues from other countries,” the statement said.
Even before this, some farmers on Monday, February 19, will go with heavy equipment to Prague, where they want to block the highway.
“We cannot rule out that border crossings and roads will be blocked,” said Barbora Pankova, spokeswoman for the Agrarian Chamber.
It is indicated that representatives of agricultural organizations from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia on Monday and Tuesday discussed with the European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski policy-related problems of the EU and its impact on European agriculture. The farmers submitted their requests to the European Commissioner.
“We are talking about compensation to farmers for compliance with new rules related to environmental protection, relief in the field of bureaucracy and transparency of the subsidy system, as well as regulation of Ukrainian products going to in the EU market,” the message explained.
Farmers threaten that if the European Commission does not present a plan to solve these problems, actions at border crossings may be repeated.
European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis called on Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to lift their unilateral restrictions on grain imports from Ukraine, as the EU develops alternative mechanisms. The latter will help protect European farmers from excess Ukrainian products.
