The former US president recalled how he threatened NATO allies to “encourage Russia” aggression against them.
Former President Donald Trump said that during his presidency in the United States he threatened NATO leaders that he would “encourage Russia to do whatever it wants” with states that owe money to the Alliance. He spoke about it in a speech in South Carolina on February 10, The New York Times wrote.
Trump recalled a conversation with a European leader who asked if the United States would defend his country in the event of a Russian attack if the state owed money to NATO.
“No, I wouldn’t defend you. In fact, I would encourage them (Russians – ed.) to do whatever they want. You have to pay your bills,” the former US president said then.
The White House called Trump’s words “appalling and senseless.”
“Encouraging attacks on our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling and unjustified – and it threatens US national security, global stability and our economy at home,” said the spokesperson. White House Andrew Bates.
Trump has previously said that NATO support is too heavy for the United States. The North Atlantic Alliance, in his opinion, was draining America’s financial and military resources.
Let’s remember that Trump said he would “end the war” in Ukraine even before his inauguration. He also criticized Europe for “giving Ukraine 10 times less money than the United States.”
