This was reported by Defense Express with reference to a report on the “disassembly” of a rocket launcher “landed” by the Ukrainian Defense Forces during the repelling of one of the Russian attacks in January 2024.
Despite the sanctions, Iran still has access to a number of Western-made components, the publication notes.
The following Western components were found in Shahed-238:
- The turbojet engine was identified as type TJ150 from the Czech company PBS Velká Bíteš, having a maximum thrust of 1500 N with a weight of 18.9 kg, a diameter of 272 mm and a length of 518 mm. This engine provides the Shahed-238 with a speed of about 520 km/h during the cruise phase of flight, which was recorded during radar surveillance of this drone;
- The traditional system for these aircraft-projectiles, consisting of satellite and inertial systems, is responsible for navigation. To receive satellite navigation signals, a block of four TW1721 antennas from the Canadian company Tallysman is used;
- satellite navigation signal processing is implemented on AD9361BBCZ chips from Analog Devices, MIMXRT1052 microcontroller from NXP USA Inc and N63A0QI chip from Intel – all USA;
- the inertial navigation unit is also built on Western electronics using STM32F405 microcontroller chips manufactured by STMicroelectronics (Switzerland) and the iSensor ADIS16480 inertial measurement module from Analog Devices (USA);
- The flight control and control module is built around the TMS320 F28335PGFA microprocessor from Texas Instruments (USA).
Thus, the Iranian Shahed-238 is assembled from foreign components available on the civilian market, the publication notes. “At the same time, the possibility of such things as miniature jet engines from the Czech Republic getting to Tehran is quite interesting for research. For it is precisely this that can be made impossible.
