In Estonia they believe that the Metropolitan poses a security threat. According to government officials, he did not condemn Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
The Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Evgeniy (Valery Reshetnikov) of Tallinn and all Estonia, returned to Russia on February 6 due to the refusal of the Estonian authorities to extend his residence permit. This was reported by the Russian media.
According to the head of Pihja Prefecture’s Border Guard Bureau, Indrek Aru, department officials met with Russian citizen Valery Reshetnikov the previous day and informed him that his temporary residence permit would not be extended.
Earlier, the Police and Border Guard Board announced that it will not renew the residence permit of the head of the EOC MP and that he must leave Estonia by February 6.
According to the Department, the Metropolitan poses a security threat. According to government officials, he did not condemn Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. He was also denied the 90-day right, required by law, to appeal and remain in the country after the expiration of his residence permit.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kallas said that “this decision is related to a specific person, to the specific activities of a specific person in Estonia and is not related to the church.”
As you know, Metropolitan Eugene was elected primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate on May 29, 2018. Since then, his residence permit has been renewed twice. The license granted to him will expire on February 6th.
It was also reported that Latvia will deport at least 1,213 Russian citizens who did not comply with the requirements of the immigration law and did not request a residence permit in the country.
