The warning was conveyed to Ukraine last month during a meeting between the Chinese ambassador in Kyiv and Ukrainian officials, the sources said.
China has told Ukraine that bilateral relations could be damaged by Kyiv’s inclusion of 14 Chinese companies on its list of international war sponsors. Reuters reported this on Thursday, February 1, citing two Ukrainian officials.
According to them, the warning was conveyed to Ukraine last month during a meeting between the Chinese ambassador in Kyiv and Ukrainian officials.
The agency recalls that Ukraine includes 48 foreign companies, including 14 from China, on the list of international war sponsors whose activities will support the Russian military machine.
In particular, the list includes the following giants from China:
-
Alibaba Group;
-
Xiaomi Corporation;
-
China National Offshore Oil Company;
-
Chinese Petrochemical Company;
-
China National Petroleum Company;
-
China Railway Construction Corporation.
“The ambassador said that the whole (blacklist situation) could negatively affect our relations,” said one of the sources.
It is said that China did not put any conditions or “time frame” for Ukraine, it only expressed an opinion about the list.
A second source suggested that Beijing could link this issue to China’s purchases of Ukrainian grain.
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, China was Ukraine’s largest trading partner and remains an important buyer of Ukrainian grain, oil, and iron ore.
Let’s recall that Ukraine invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping to the Peace Summit in Switzerland according to the previously proposed Peace Formula.
However, a Chinese representative was not among the participants in the fourth meeting of national security advisers on the Peace Formula on January 14 in Davos. The media also reported that Chinese Prime Minister Li Qian decided not to interfere with President Vladimir Zelensky at the forum in Davos.
