This was announced by Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. We are talking about Fedor Sandor.
As far as I know, it has passed the test to see if it is at the final stage,” the minister commented to Radio Liberty.
The post of Ukrainian Ambassador to Hungary has remained vacant since July 2022. In March 2023, Hungarian journalists reported that Ukraine was considering Fedor Sandor for this post.
He is a Ukrainian of Hungarian origin from Transcarpathia, better known as the “professor from the trenches”, who volunteered to go to war in February 2022. On August 8, 2023, Hungarian President Katalin Nowak agreed to the appointment of a new Ukrainian ambassador.
Sandor is a professor at Uzhgorod National University.
How Kuleba assessed the negotiations in Uzhgorod
The Ukrainian and Hungarian sides are driven by a mutual interest in developing good neighborly relations and proceed from the fact that there are no issues that cannot be resolved in a bilateral dialogue.
This was stated on Monday, January 29, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs during an approach to the press following a working meeting in Uzhgorod with the participation of the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Ermak and the Minister of External Economy and Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Szijjártó.
Kuleba noted that the key topic at the negotiations was Ukraine’s membership in the EU and Euro-Atlantic integration. In this context, the minister noted the positive cooperation between Ukraine and Hungary in opening negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in December 2023.
We welcome Hungary’s decision to compromise in December 2023. At the same time, there are a number of other important decisions ahead that we discussed today. We proceed from the fact that Ukraine, which is a member of the EU, best meets the strategic interests of Hungary, the Foreign Ministry press service quotes the minister.
In turn, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Ermak said that negotiations with the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry laid a constructive foundation for the upcoming meeting of the heads of the two states.
He also noted the symbolic step of Szijjarto, who began his working visit by visiting the cemetery and commemorating the Ukrainian heroes who died defending Ukraine from Russian aggression.
During the negotiations, the parties discussed a number of issues of bilateral cooperation. Dmitry Kuleba noted the importance for both countries of developing sectoral cooperation, in particular with regard to projects in the field of logistics, transport infrastructure, energy, and finance. “We agreed that the relevant departments will hold professional consultations and present road maps that will outline how we should move forward,” the minister noted.
Kuleba noted that significant attention during the negotiations was focused on the issue of ensuring the rights of national minorities. The parties agreed to resolve the issues on both sides in good faith.
We received from the Hungarian side an exhaustive list of questions in the context of the issue of protecting national minorities. We agreed that we will assemble a special commission, which in 10 days will present to the governments of both countries a specific understanding of how and what needs to be resolved, or will be decided by that time,” the minister said.
He thanked his Hungarian colleague for the humanitarian assistance provided to Ukraine and Ukrainian citizens since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. We are talking in particular about the shelter of Ukrainian citizens, children, as well as the treatment of Ukrainian military personnel.
