As French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu clarified, we are talking about supplying the Ukrainian Defense Forces with 50 units of such aerial bombs every month starting in January.
On January 27, the Ministry of Defense spoke in detail about the new product in the arsenal of the Ukrainian Air Force.
The AASM Hammer is a precision modular air-to-ground weapon developed by the French company Safran Electronics & Defense. This is a special set of equipment installed in standard aerial bombs, turning them into high-precision weapons with an increased destruction radius.
Used in missions to destroy/suppress enemy air defenses, air support for operations at the front line, as well as to destroy important moving ground targets.
The smart bomb is equipped with a front combined guidance kit and a rear range extension kit. The range of destruction of targets is up to 70 km and can vary depending on the altitude of the ammunition used.
The weapon is modular because it integrates different types of guidance units installed on different types of aerial bombs weighing from 250 kg to 1 ton.
The development is based on the “fire and forget” principle.
The basic version of the kit has a hybrid inertial-satellite guidance system, which can be additionally equipped with a thermal imaging or laser homing system to increase accuracy. Consequently, the ammunition is self-contained and insensitive to electronic interference.
The basic carrier of the AASM Hammer is the French 4th generation Rafale fighter. However, this weapon can be used from F-16, Mirage 2000 and Mirage F1 fighters.
The ammunition could be integrated into Soviet platforms, including MiG and Su tactical bombers.
