The US Department of Homeland Security will now be given the authority to close the border under certain conditions.
The US Senate has agreed to expand the country’s powers to stem the flow of illegal migrants across the Mexican border. CNN reported it.
The agreement is scheduled to be released to the Senate next week. It should speed up the asylum process to resolve cases within six months. Under the current system, it can take up to 10 years to seek asylum.
The agreement also opens a window for negotiations on aid funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Senate leaders hope they can join the deal to debate.
US President Joe Biden had previously said that the agreement worked on by negotiators in the Senate was tough and fair.
The US Department of Homeland Security will be given new emergency authority to close the border if the daily number of migrants reaches 4,000 in a week. Migrants will be allowed to stay if they are found to be fleeing torture or persecution in their home country.
If the number of crossings exceeds 8,500 a day, the border will be closed to migrants crossing illegally. Under the proposal, any migrant who attempts to cross the border twice while it is closed would be barred from entering the US for a year.
We remind you that Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said that in the next day or two it will be clear whether the US Senate will be able to conclude an agreement on the border with Mexico, providing for the extension of aid to Ukraine.
