A Manhattan federal court jury has found that former President Donald Trump must pay about $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll because of public statements he made using insulting words toward her and denying her rape allegations.

The total settlement amount is more than eight times the amount Carroll sought in her original lawsuit. The writer expected compensation of $10 million for her damaged reputation. According to CNN, the jury decided that Trump should pay E. Jean Carroll $18.3 million in damages and $65 million in fines.
In 2019, Carroll published a column in which she talked about meeting Trump in a store in the mid-nineties. According to her, in the fitting room the billionaire forcibly kissed him, stole his underwear and raped him.
In response to the publication, Trump said that he did not know Carol and she was “not to his taste.” During the interrogation, the journalist’s lawyers showed the politician a photograph from 1987, where the journalist and her then-husband communicated with Trump and his wife; The Republican, looking at the photograph, confused Carroll and his first wife Ivanna in it.
In May 2023, a jury found him guilty of sexual assault in another Carroll lawsuit and awarded him a five million dollar fine.
After the verdict, Trump continued to publicly call Carol’s words a lie. In court, the journalist spoke about the constant threats that Republican supporters sent her. The jury at the second trial (due to possible public pressure, they were selected and deliberated anonymously) found his statements to be malicious. In their decision, they awarded Carol not only the amount she spent on lawyers, but also an additional $65 million in fines.
Trump called the process a “witch hunt” and “political persecution,” and the verdict a “total joke.” The politician said he would appeal this decision.
