The head of the European Council said he did not want the disputes to “distract our attention from the main thing.”
The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, has decided to withdraw his candidacy from the European Parliament elections. It was reported by La Libre.
“I don’t want disputes to distract us from the main thing and damage the institution I lead, and therefore the European project,” he said.
According to him, he underestimated the “scale and radicality of some of the negative reactions” to the announcement of his run for the European Parliament.
“I remember that offensive attacks increasingly take precedence over factual and objective arguments. In my opinion, this has a negative impact on the development of democratic life. On a personal level, it makes me question of meaning and impact, not only for myself, but also for the people close to me, electoral promises to which I have dedicated my life for 30 years,” he said.
We previously wrote that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban could not lead the European Council if its current President Charles Michel resigned. The European Union has enough time to choose another alternative.
