Israel must report to the UN court in one month on the implementation of appropriate measures to protect the population of the sector.
The International Court of Justice on Friday did not call on Israel to stop its military operation in the Gaza Strip. However, he accepted that the Israeli side has taken steps to protect Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Bloomberg reports.
“Israel must act immediately to ensure the provision of services and humanitarian aid (…) to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” said President Joan Donoghue, announcing the interim decision.
The court ruled that Israel has an obligation to ensure the protection of buildings in Gaza, as well as the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the enclave. The court also ordered Israeli authorities to “take action against those who incite genocide.” We are talking, in particular, about “killing members of a group, inflicting serious bodily harm or mental disability on members of a group, intentionally creating for any group such living conditions calculated to bring about complete or partial physical destruction.”
The court ordered Israel to report in one month on the implementation of related measures. The court made this decision in a lawsuit filed by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide of the Palestinian population in Gaza.
South Africa requested that, as part of the interim measures, the court order an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza, but the court explained that it had the right to take interim measures different from those requested by the plaintiff.
The current court decision is temporary. We talk about the steps that need to be taken without waiting for the analysis to be completed. Taking such steps does not mean that the court has decided whether Israel is guilty of committing genocide.
Earlier, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that Israel plans to complete the intensive phase of the offensive in the southern part of the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.
