Thus, Türkiye fully approved Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. And the Turkish parliament approved the ratification of the protocol on January 23. This decision was preceded by several hours of debate. This was reported by the official gazette of Turkey.
Erdogan sent the protocol of ratification to parliament in October 2023, but even there it did not move for a long time, since Ankara demanded progress on the issue of providing it with American F-16 fighters.
As you know, Sweden has been waiting more than a year and a half for its application for membership to be approved by all NATO member countries. Its entry into the North Atlantic Alliance has not yet been approved only by Hungary, which promised that it would “not be the last” in this process.
Let us remind you that Sweden has submitted an application to join NATO in the summer of 2022 together with Finland. In April 2023, only Finland joined NATO, and Turkey opposed Sweden’s entry into the alliance, putting forward a number of conditions.
