In recent months, Yemen’s Houthi militants have carried out unprecedented attacks on United States military forces and international vessels operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The US put the Houthis back on the list of global terrorist organizations because of their attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. This was stated in a statement by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
“In recent months, Yemen’s Houthi militants have carried out unprecedented attacks against United States military forces and international vessels operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. this attack falls under the classic definition of terrorism,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan believes that in this way the Houthis have endangered American personnel, civilian sailors and their partners, and their actions pose a threat to global trade and freedom of navigation.
“Today, in response to these ongoing threats and attacks, the United States announced the designation of Ansarullah, also known as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. This decision is an important tool in preventing Houthis in financing terrorism, further limiting their access to financial markets and holding them accountable for their actions. If the Houthis stop their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, The United States will immediately reconsider this decision,” the statement said.
The decision will take effect 30 days after the announcement.
It was previously reported that the Yemeni Houthis threatened the United States with a full-scale war.
