The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture reached an agreement with representatives of large farming organizations. The demands of agricultural producers who protested for six days and blocked the Ukrainian border were satisfied. This was reported by Euractiv on Tuesday, January 16.
Romania’s Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu said the agreement included 13 farmers’ demands. Discussions will continue as a compromise needs to be found on the remaining demands.
The government has pledged to fully subsidize all agricultural excise taxes until 2026 and immediately implement provisions for loans with subsidized interest.
One of the representatives of the farmers in the negotiations, Marius Miku, said that the signed agreement does not mean an immediate end to the protests, because the upcoming negotiations with the transporters, which will take place until Thursday, may affect their duration .
According to him, it is important for the government to give permission to deviate from the mandatory crop rotation rules and 4% of collateral lands in each farm before January 31.
In addition, the Romanian government satisfied claims for compensation for damage caused by imports from Ukraine. The measures include clear labeling of cereals and other goods and electronic monitoring of seals using GPS in the port of Constanta.
Barbu countered that Romania was seeking to impose duties on grain imports from Ukraine.
