The border is currently closed, but Russian influence in the form of illegal entry continues, the government said.
Finland intends to take further measures to protect its eastern borders. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized this on Saturday, January 13, as quoted by Yle.
He said that after the closure of the checkpoints on the border with Russia, Finland will continue to increase the number of fences to deter illegal migrants.
“If necessary, we will take additional measures and will not sit back. The government will use all legal methods and, if necessary, may change the law. Despite the closed borders, illegal migration continues,” he said.
Orpo said that about 20 people have entered the country illegally in the past week and it is impossible to completely stop it.
“The situation has escalated. We are ready for the continuation of Russian influence on the border. Now there is physical control, a fence has been built at critical points, and in the spring there will be more fences,” said by Orpo.
He indicated that Russian border checkpoints will remain closed until February 11.
As is known, until this time, asylum seekers arrived at the Finnish border only through the checkpoint by bicycle, until Finland decided to close the checkpoints.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpota said that Russia is conducting a hybrid border attack against Finland.
