President Joe Biden warned in a statement late Jan. 11 that he would not hesitate to take further action if necessary.
These targeted strikes send a clear signal that the United States and our partners will not target our personnel or allow hostile actors to compromise freedom of navigation,” he stressed.
The UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement that “early indications are that the Houthis’ ability to threaten commercial shipping has suffered a blow.”
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is currently in hospital due to complications from surgery, said in a statement that the strikes targeted Houthi forces and assets, including drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, coastal radars and aerial surveillance.
At the same time, Iran, which supports the Houthis, strongly condemned the attacks. A Houthi spokesman said the group would continue to attack ships heading to Israel.
The Russian Federation said it had invited an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the military strikes.
It is noted that a representative of the Houthis confirmed “raids” in the Yemeni capital Sani, the cities of Saada and Dhamar, as well as in the province of Hodeidah, calling them “American-Zionist-British aggression.”
According to witnesses, the “raids” targeted a military base adjacent to Sanaa airport, a military facility near Taiz airport, the Houthi naval base in Hodeidah and military facilities in Hajjah province.
The Houthis say their attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes are a show of support for the Palestinians and the Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza.
