Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused one of the largest displacement crises since World War II, the UNHCR insisted.
The number of forced migrants in the world for the first time in history has exceeded the “shocking” 100 million people. This is stated in the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), published on Thursday, June 16.
It indicates that the number of people forced to leave their homes has increased annually over the past decade and has reached its highest level since registration began.
Today, one in every 78 people on Earth is a refugee. UNHCR believes this is a “major milestone” that was little expected 10 years ago.
By the end of 2021, the number of internally displaced people due to war, violence, persecution and human rights violations will increase by 8% compared to the previous year, and reached 89.3 million people. This, according to the UNHCR, is more than twice the increase compared to what it was 10 years ago and is explained by the many escalations of conflicts “and new ones that have erupted.”
The report highlights that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered one of the largest displacement crises since World War II.
UNHCR noted that by the end of 2021, low- and middle-income countries will host 83% of the world’s refugees.
Turkey is said to lead in terms of the number of refugees accepted into the country – 3.8 million people. Followed by Colombia (1.8 million), Pakistan (1.5 million refugees), Uganda (1.5 million) and Germany (1.3 million).
Recall that on June 14, more than 7.5 million Ukrainians went abroad because of the Russian aggression. More than 3.3 million refugees from Ukraine have received temporary protection status in EU countries. At the same time, about 2.5 million Ukrainians have returned to their homeland.
