Pope Francis noted that he considers it very dangerous that “behind the dramatic international events, there is a risk that the war in Ukraine could become a forgotten war.”
Pope Francis said Russia’s massive attacks on Ukraine “can in no way be justified,” calling them “shameless and unacceptable.” This was reported on the website of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
As the head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Svyatoslav, noted, on December 29 last year, he sent a letter to Pope Francis, reporting the tragic consequences of the largest Russian missile attack on Ukraine .
In his letter of response, Pope Francis said: “Once again, through your (head of the UGCC – ed.) person, I want to express my closeness to the suffering Ukraine, mourn the murdered and believe in God’s salvation , comfort the wounded and embrace all that I belong to that category of clergy who try to give people hope in a situation that seems most hopeless… With you, I share the same feelings of rejection and pain you feel from those military operations, the striking of the civilian population and the civilian infrastructure of the entire country is outrageous and unacceptable and cannot in any way be justified.”
Also in the letter, Pope Francis mentioned that he considers it very dangerous that “behind the dramatic international events, there is a risk that the war in Ukraine could become a forgotten war.”
He added that “our duty is to do everything to ensure that this war is not silent, not only to realize the full horror of the tragic events, but above all to compel all those responsible, as well as the international community to find a peaceful solution.”
According to the pope, at every opportunity he calls not to forget the war in Ukraine.
Let’s remember that on December 29, the Russian army launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine. Russian attacks have targeted social and critical infrastructure. Air defense forces destroyed 27 suicide bombers and 87 cruise missiles.
A few days after December 29, Russia used nearly 300 missiles and over 200 suicide bombers against Ukraine.
