A new poll from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago shows that most Russians see the war in Ukraine as protection from the West, and Putin’s approval ratings remain high despite worsening living conditions for millions of Russians.
American sociologists surveyed 1,046 Russian adults in the Russian Federation and Russian-occupied Crimea, using data from Russian mobile operators.
The poll found that 67% of participants approve of Putin’s foreign policy, 58% approve of his domestic policy, and 66% plan to vote for Putin in the presidential election this March.
According to the data obtained in the survey, 63% of respondents support the war in Ukraine, 64% consider the war “a civilizational struggle between Russia and the West.”
The Institute for the Study of War notes that this result contrasts with other studies that have shown declining support for a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In the past, sociologists found out which countries’ populations support Ukraine the most. The highest level of support for Ukraine was shown by residents of Portugal (86%), Sweden (81%), Australia (80%), Great Britain (79%) and Canada (78%).
