The cause of botulism is more often home-made canned meat, fish, more often vegetables, dried or smoked products in case of non-compliance with the relevant requirements for harvesting.
In the Odessa region of the city of Yuzhny, a 37 -year -old man with botulism was hospitalized in serious condition. This was announced on Thursday, June 16, at the state institution Odessa Regional Center for Control and Prevention of Diseases of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
A patient born in 1985 said that on June 9 he ate homemade duck stew. The man’s condition worsened on June 13. He had abdominal pain, weakness, dry mouth, double vision, blurred vision, and ptosis.
The victim was hospitalized by ambulance to the intensive care unit of Odessa Infectious Diseases Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with botulism.
At the hospital, the man was injected with anti-botulinum serum. Now he is continuing treatment.
Doctors noted that in 2021, four cases of botulism were registered in the Odessa region, one of which was fatal.
Botulism is an infectious disease that occurs as a result of poisoning with toxins from botulinum bacteria. The disease is accompanied by severe damage to the central and autonomic nervous systems.
The cause of botulism is more often homemade canned meat, fish, more often vegetables, dried or smoked products in case of non-compliance with the relevant requirements during preparation, processing or storage of the product. Also, the cause of the disease may be the consumption of dried or smoked fish and smoked meat products (sausages, ham, etc.).
Botulism cannot be determined by color or taste: the microorganism that causes the disease does not spoil the food. All canned foods that are not washed poorly, improperly or not adequately heat-treated, carried or stored improperly are potentially dangerous. Even canned food, where everything is fixed on the expiration date, looks and tastes, can be contaminated.
Symptoms of botulism can appear both 2 hours after eating contaminated foods, and later – even after 4 days. These symptoms include:

nausea, vomiting and other signs of damage to the digestive system;

severe dry mouth;

weakness and increased fatigue;

nausea.
Doctors urge residents of the region not to eat suspicious canned food, and at the first sign of illness, consult a doctor immediately.
