Hundreds of farmers on tractors arrived in the center of Berlin on January 8 to protest against the government’s cancellation of benefits. They brought manure in tractors and threatened to dump it at the Brandenburg Gate if their conditions were not met.

German farmers began a week of protests against government policies. In several federal states, the entrances to the highways are blocked, and multi-kilometer columns of tractors are heading to the sites of the protests.

Farmers are protesting against government plans to phase out agricultural diesel subsidies.

The police agreed to carry out the action only if the barriers for cars were opened every 30 minutes.

The farmers challenged this decision in the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin and Brandenburg, which sided with them, rejecting the police demands. According to the court, the danger from constantly opening and closing the blockade is greater than from permanent closure, said Henrik Wendorff, president of the farmers’ association.

However, demonstrators must keep emergency lanes on roads open in emergency situations for police and ambulances to pass through, and are not allowed to block highway exits.

Farmers plan to paralyze traffic and other federal lands, protesting against the government’s intentions to cut subsidies and benefits.

Due to the strike in Brandenburg, around 200 supermarkets may not receive supplies on January 9th.

The Brandenburg trade association said the farmers’ strike, which is taking place across Germany from today, has paralyzed an important logistics center in Großbeeren. As a result, according to the association, about 200 supermarkets may not receive goods on Tuesday.

Association spokesman Nils Busch-Petersen said the industrial area was completely cordoned off and companies were unable to enter the area.
