Ukraine, Sweden, Canada and the UK have appealed to ICAO regarding the downing of Iran’s UIA plane.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and three countries have jointly started considering the dispute with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) against Iran for the use of weapons against the civilian aircraft of UIA flight PS752. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on January 8.
Ministers from Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and the UK jointly initiated an ICAO dispute against Iran for using a weapon against a civil aircraft in flight in violation of Iran’s international legal obligations to under Article 3bis of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (known as the Chicago Convention).
“Four years ago, Iran shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, killing 176 people, including citizens and residents of our countries. For four years now, Iran has refused to accept the full international legal responsibility for the downing of flight PS752, despite numerous attempts to enter into negotiations on this issue,” the statement said.
Let’s recall that on January 8, 2020, a UIA plane was shot down by the Iranian military over Tehran. Then everyone on board the liner died – 167 passengers and nine crew members. Most of the victims were Iranians and Canadians, 11 people were citizens of Ukraine.
Later, Iran offered to pay the Ukrainian families of those killed in the UIA plane crash compensation in the amount of 150 thousand dollars for each victim, but Ukraine rejected this offer.
On April 16, 2023, an Iranian court convicted 10 military personnel in the case of the downing of flight PS752.
