Warsaw was reminded of its obligation to ensure the free movement of vehicles on the Ukrainian border.
European Commissioner for Transport Adina Velan has sent a letter to Polish Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak for blocking border crossings near the Ukrainian border. Brussels called on Warsaw to ensure the free movement of vehicles, RMF FM reports.
It noted that the European Commission “remains deeply concerned” about the blockage of the Dorogusk border crossing and the fact that other border crossings between Poland and Ukraine are still blocked. The border blockade has important consequences for Ukraine, Poland and the European Union.
The European Commissioner reminded Poland of its obligation to ensure the free movement of vehicles at the Ukrainian border in accordance with the road transport agreement between the EU and Ukraine.
The European Commission also offered cooperation and support to solve the problems. It is possible that another trilateral meeting of representatives of Poland, Ukraine and the EU will be held “if necessary.”
The EC noted that the current negotiations are concerned with improving the functioning of the Ukrainian electronic queue system.
Violation of EU law by blocking the border can result in a claim in the EU court and lead to the adoption of measures provided for in the agreements to eliminate such violations.
Let’s recall that on January 6, the Polish government signed an agreement with farmers to end the blockade of the border crossing with Ukraine at the Medika-Szczegin checkpoint, which Polish farmers resumed after a break on January 4.
Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski threatened to block Ukraine’s duty-free trade with the EU.
