On January 1, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was hospitalized due to complications after a planned operation. Joe Biden didn’t know about it for days.

The Pentagon announced Austin’s hospitalization on January 5, and the next day the Secretary of Defense issued his first statement on this matter, CNN writes.
Lloyd Austin did not provide any details about why he was admitted to the hospital. According to the minister, he is already better and expects to return to the Pentagon.
Austin remains at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center but has resumed full-time duties. He himself said that he was recovering after a planned medical procedure, but did not specify its details.
The minister’s reluctance to publicly announce his hospitalization caused discontent both in government circles and in American society, since it contradicts the generally accepted procedure in such cases: deterioration in the health of the president and other high-ranking officials is reported immediately.
I acknowledge that I could have done better by ensuring that the public was properly informed. I commit to doing this in the future. However, it is important to say: this was my personal medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions in disclosing information about it,” Austin said yesterday.
White House officials also declined to say when they became aware of Austin’s condition, saying they do not discuss internal communications.
The President has been informed of Secretary Austin’s medical problem. “He wishes him a speedy recovery,” the National Security Council spokesman said in a statement.
